Economists, My Top 100

These are just some among the many economists whose contributions have been truly immense. There are, of course, many others as well. Hence, this list is by no means exhaustive — the numbering merely reflects my own view of their relative impact on the profession and on the way we think about key economic events.

There is also a valuable online resource titled The History of Economic Thought website, which maintains an extensive collection of literature on the various schools of economic thought. The site organizes this material under the following broad headings:

Schools of Political Economy

Essays on Some Unsettled Questions of Political Economy By John Stuart Mill [PdF]

Neoclassical Schools
  • What Is Neoclassical Economics? [PdF]
  • Economic Transition as a Crisis of Vision: Comparing Classical And Neoclassical Theories Of General Equilibrium [PdF]
  • Neoclassical Economics as a Theory of Politics and Institutions [PdF]

In my considered view, Professor William Arnold Barnett stands as the foremost living (macro)economist. Following closely is Thomas Sowell, whose intellectual breadth remains virtually unmatched in illuminating the delicate interplay between liberty, virtue, and the functioning of a free-market capitalist system. Sowell’s writings do more than challenge the mainstream – they embody reason, clarity, and a profound common sense, accessible only to those who grasp the inherently interdisciplinary nature of economics.

The purpose here is to encourage readers to engage with economists whose comprehension of economic realities transcends that of their contemporaries—those whose work not only synthesizes multiple strands of economic thought into an integrated framework but also remains firmly anchored in empirical and institutional realities. I maintain, with conviction, that one must resist the inclination to conform to the prevailing narratives so often echoed in the media and, regrettably, perpetuated even within academic discourse. Most often, what remains overlooked is the other side of the story – the story grounded in academic research published across numerous economic journals, where data are rigorously measured against theory to understand the behavior of agents in the real world. This form of inquiry, known as empirical research, represents the foundation of positive economics – the study of how the world is and how it actually behaves. Empirical research provides a truthful account of the causal feedback structures within macroeconomic systems – systems that are, in essence, intricate networks of interdependence. It seeks to uncover the linkages between one event (X) and another (Y), tracing how shocks or policies ripple through the economic web. Unfortunately, public discourse often fails to recognize these underlying causal mechanisms. The public is instead fed with simplistic narratives and propaganda, propagated by sections of the media and, regrettably, even by individuals who claim the title of “economist.” These self-styled “economists” cannot withstand scrutiny when their claims are tested against rigorous evidence and sound analytical reasoning. Macroeconomics, in truth, functions both within the structure of general equilibrium and as an evolutionary, ever-adapting system — a dual nature that is continuing to become evident to me in my progression as student of the subject.

William Barnett

Among Barnett’s many contributions, his seminal work on Divisia Monetary Aggregates stands out, originating from his influential 1980 paper. The Divisia framework refines the measurement of monetary aggregates by incorporating two key elements: the monetary components included in the index and the weights assigned to each, grounded firmly in microeconomic theory. In contrast, the traditional simple-sum aggregates lack such theoretical rigor. Barnett’s 2012 book, Getting It Wrong: How Faulty Monetary Statistics Undermine the Fed, the Financial System, and the Economy, delves deeply into this issue—examining how reliance on flawed, simple-sum monetary measures contributed to the buildup and eventual eruption of the financial crisis. I would strongly encourage anyone interested in understanding the roots of that crisis to read this book. The first part, written in non-technical language, is accessible to general readers and offers a lucid explanation of what went wrong at the very foundations of the Federal Reserve System. The Global Financial Crisis of 2007–08 stands as a striking example of this disconnect – a case frequently discussed, yet rarely understood in terms of its true underlying causes.

Barnett’s work remains highly influential. In recognition of its significance, several central banks have begun to publish Divisia monetary aggregates—some openly, others quietly. The Center for Financial Stability now maintains and publishes Divisia monetary aggregates for the United States and other economies, continuing the legacy of Barnett’s groundbreaking research.

James M. Buchanan

James Buchanan was awarded the Economic Sciences Prize for his contributions to the theory of political decision-making and public economics. Traditional economic theory explains in great detail how consumers make decisions regarding purchase of goods, choice of work, product investments etc. In a series of studies, Buchanan has developed a corresponding theory of decision-making in the public sector. His best-known work is Calculus of Consent (1962), written in collaboration with Gordon Tullock.
